Ukraine: Journalism and Mental Health Initiative
First ever nationwide survey of mental health and journalism in a wartime setting
Dr Walsh, with support from Daily Humanity Foundation, is heading up the first ever nationwide survey of mental health and journalism in a wartime setting. This massive initiative provides real-time understanding of the specific challenges faced by Ukrainian media workers, and the survey will result in published reports, guidelines for Ukrainian newsrooms, and updates in psychological resilience trainings for journalists throughout the country.
Preliminary Findings of Ukrainian Survey
Initial data from the survey reveal a critical need for greater mental health awareness and support. Full report to be published in spring/summer 2025.

A public talk in Kyiv, Ukraine, January 2025. Walsh, accompanied by photojournalists Oksana Parafaniuk and Evgeniy Maloletka, led a talk for local media workers. The talk addressed the emotional tolls of working in a wartime setting.
ARIJ: 17th Annual Forum
“Beyond the Frame: How the War in Gaza is Redefining Conflict Photography”
Walsh spoke at the 17th annual ARIJ (Arab Reporters for Investigative Journalism) forum in Jordan, December 2024, discussing the risks and challenges that Palestinian photographers have been facing in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The discussion was moderated by Hoda Osman, President of ARIJ.

Psychological Safety Awareness and Clinics
Walsh routinely works with the ACOS (A Culture Of Safety) Alliance, advocating for and establishing better industry practices around mental health, including leading safety clinics at the International Journalism Festival (IJF) in Italy in 2024, and again upcoming at IJF in 2025.
