Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter

The historic 2020 Black Lives Matter protests and the devastating Covid-19 pandemic presented unique challenges for photojournalism, forcing photographers into a terrain defined by new ethical, technological, and safety (emotional and physical) concerns, as well as innovative attacks on press freedom. Through a series of interviews—with top photographers who covered 2020’s biggest crises, as well as key photo editors who grappled with these unprecedented obstacles inside the newsroom—Through the Lens: The Pandemic and Black Lives Matter unpacks the industry’s most critical debates as it sheds light on the experiences and thought processes of the visual journalists themselves.

Conversations on Conflict Photography

In today's image-saturated culture, the visual documentation of suffering around the world is more prevalent than ever. Yet instead of always deepening the knowledge or compassion of viewers, conflict photography can result in fatigue or even inspire apathy. Given this tension between the genre's ostensible goals and its effects, what is the purpose behind taking and showing images of war and crisis?

Shadow of Memory

This new volume showcases never-before-seen photographs from the Bosnian War, deepening the collective history and cultural archive of the former Yugoslavia. As Walsh writes, "The photographic image ... is a frozen moment of time captured visually. It is static. But here we witness the magic of photography, as this collection allows the old images to change—in meaning, effect, impact, or import—when placed into new context."

Millennium Villages Project

The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) grew out of a United Nations summit conference in 2000, where nearly 200 nations agreed on eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—including reducing child mortality, promoting gender equality, fighting HIV/AIDS, achieving universal primary education, improving maternal health, and reducing extreme poverty and hunger.

Macondo

Macondo: Memories of the Colombian Conflict shows the realities that formed the basis of the conflict in Colombia. Photography by Alvaro Ybarra Zavala. As Walsh writes, "The plurality of interpretations one can pull from this book reflects the parallel realities, competing truths, and rival perspectives that characterize the state of existence in a country mired in war for more than fifty years.”

This volume explores these profound literary shifts through the work of twelve talented scholars who study text and image relations in diverse forms and contexts.
