Photographing Crisis Today
We are bombarded by visions of crisis and conflict. Wars, natural disasters, protests, and refugees are shown everywhere. The growth of social media has only accelerated and expanded the prevalence of such imagery. But to what end?
In answering this question, Lauren Walsh, author of Conversations on Conflict Photography, explores topics such as the physical dangers and psychological tolls that photojournalists face, and the ethical complexities surrounding images of crisis and suffering. Giving a historical view as well as an eye into the present moment, she covers case studies that range in time and theme, from the Bosnian War to the ongoing conflict in Syria, and from Black Lives Matters protests to the coverage of COVID-19.
There has never been a more important time for investigating the role of this photography in shaping public understanding of international and domestic affairs.
